Gaussian splatting for a web showroom: what to evaluate
Capturing a space can preserve details that are difficult to model by hand. A useful web visit also needs a clear route, manageable downloads and a scene that works on mobile.
What gaussian splatting is useful for
Gaussian splatting represents a scene using many primitives with position, shape, colour and transparency. It can reconstruct a space’s appearance from images and support viewing it from different positions.
For a showroom, it is worth considering when the goal is to present an existing location faithfully. Quality depends on capture, processing and the viewpoints visitors can reach.
If you need replaceable parts, dimension changes or product configuration, consider editable meshes or a combination of techniques. A visual capture is not a CAD model. In that case, start with what a 3D configurator needs to prove.
Plan the visitor’s route before capture
Identify points of interest first. A corner photographed from only one direction may reveal gaps or artefacts from another.
Inspect reflective surfaces, glass, thin objects and moving elements. These areas deserve attention even when the overall scene looks convincing.
Keep useful information outside the viewer: the location’s name, key details and a clear contact route. Visitors should not have to explore every corner to understand the offer.
An open format does not guarantee compatibility
SPZ is an open format for compact splat storage. Khronos maintains a glTF extension for this representation. In either case, the viewer must support the file’s specific capabilities.
| Decision | What to check |
|---|---|
| Export format | Compatibility with the chosen loader |
| Compression | Visual quality and preparation time |
| Levels of detail | What loads by distance and device |
| Navigation | Route boundaries and controls |
| Fallback | Images or a simpler visit if the viewer fails |
Displaying a conventional GLB does not establish support for gaussian splatting extensions. USDZ or the HTML model element should not be assumed to solve that compatibility either.
Measure the scene you will publish
Tools such as SuperSplat offer navigation and streamed levels of detail. They can help with large scenes, but results depend on content and hardware.
Test initial loading, movement, memory use and a longer session. Include a representative phone and a connection less favourable than the studio’s.
Gaussian count alone does not explain performance. Screen resolution, overlap and viewer implementation also matter.
What to request in a showroom trial
Ask for a section containing difficult areas, a defined navigation route and a short record of tested devices. Use that sample to adjust capture and technical budgets before processing the entire location.
If you are planning a virtual visit, tell us which space you want to show and who will visit. Those details help determine whether capture, modelling or a mixed approach fits.
