How much does an AI agent cost? Estimating the full workflow
The model’s rate is only part of the bill. Estimating an agent means defining the task, measuring attempts and accounting for integration and human review.
What you pay for when deploying an agent
An AI agent combines software, model access and a working process. Cost depends on scope: reading documents is different from updating orders across several systems.
Separate implementation from ongoing operation. Within each part, identify what is included and what varies with usage.
| Component | What it can cover |
|---|---|
| Design and integration | Task definition, connectors and permissions |
| Platform | Licences, purchased capacity and available features |
| Usage | Model requests, tools and external services |
| Operation | Review, incident handling and corrections |
| Maintenance | Changes to APIs, models, data and requirements |
A conversation is not necessarily one task
Platforms may charge by credits, actions, conversations or other units. Models may distinguish input, output and reused context.
Agentforce and Copilot Studio illustrate different commercial structures. Check their current terms and translate those units into your actual workflow.
One user request can trigger several lookups, model calls and retries. Comparing a platform action with a single API request may omit much of the work. This is why the pilot should also measure capability and reliability on real tasks.
Measure cost per accepted result
A useful pilot measure is:
Total pilot cost divided by completed, accepted tasks.
Include failed tasks in the total cost. Counting only successful runs hides the effort required to obtain them.
For an agent drafting product listings, record usage, review minutes and approved listings. Include difficult cases such as incomplete documentation, similar variants and changing formats.
What can increase consumption?
Accumulated history, lengthy responses, retries and additional tools can increase usage. Caching may reduce some charges when provider conditions are met; it should not be assumed for every request.
Define execution limits, alerts and a procedure for reaching the budget. Check whether a limit actually stops processing or only sends a notification.
What to request in a proposal
Ask for scope, volume assumptions, exclusions and an estimate grounded in representative tasks. Establish who maintains the integration and what happens if rates change or a model is withdrawn.
Compare the same deliverable at an acceptable quality level. A cheaper model may require more review; a more expensive one may offer little practical improvement.
To scope a pilot, describe the inputs, required result and approximate volume. Those details make a meaningful cost estimate possible.
