Product 3D models: preparing assets for multiple channels

One product can share an editable master while needing different exports. A small file does not guarantee acceptance across every channel.

Reusing a product model can save effort when production accounts for its destinations. The aim is to avoid rebuilding the product for each channel, rather than force one file into every platform.

Start with an editable master and a list of verifiable deliveries.

What to check by channel

DestinationInitial check
ShopifyAccepted formats, theme and uploaded-file processing
Google Merchant CenterProduct eligibility and virtual_model_link
AmazonFeature availability and seller publishing requirements
Own website and SafariTarget browsers, formats and fallback

Google's virtual-model attribute documents a 10 MB recommendation and 15 MB maximum, alongside category and market conditions. Check current eligibility before including it in scope.

Amazon offers 3D and AR features, but its general marketing page does not replace the seller's actual submission requirements.

File size cannot establish compatibility

Two equally sized GLB files can use different materials, animations or extensions. A model that loads in a web viewer can fail in AR or lose a feature.

Do not assume that WebP, geometry compression or a material extension works in every destination. Record what each export uses and test it there.

Our mobile 3D viewer guide separates performance recommendations from viewer restrictions.

What to keep in the master

Retain editable geometry, known scale, organised materials and source textures. Give finishes and variants stable names.

Prepare the necessary texture resolutions, simplification, formats and compatible materials from that source. Record which file belongs to each channel and product revision.

This makes it easier to update a finish without losing the connection between product page, model and purchasable variant.

Validate a multichannel delivery

Test a representative product before processing the whole catalogue. Check appearance, dimensions, orientation, loading and variant selection.

Test from the product page in the review environment, rather than only opening a file in the modelling application. Include mobile, AR where applicable and a fallback for unavailable viewers.

Safari 27 introduces <model> options discussed in our dedicated guide. Integrate them with a strategy for other browsers.

Separate compatibility from commercial impact

A successful technical submission does not establish a sales improvement. Plan a comparable pilot using the approach in our 3D configurator measurement guide.

To plan your deliveries, tell us the product, variants and priority channels.
