Zero-click searches and AI: adapting your website content
If Google visits fall, establish which queries and pages changed. Industry statistics provide context; they cannot diagnose your website by themselves.
A zero-click search does not send the user to a result, according to the measuring study's definition. It can represent several behaviours: finding an answer within Google, refining a query or abandoning it.
AI summaries add another way to obtain information inside the search engine. A useful response starts with understanding what is changing for your audience.
What Pew Research measured
Pew examined browsing activity from 900 US adults in March 2025. Traditional-result clicks occurred in 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without one.
This is an observed difference in that sample, not an experiment proving that every website will lose half its traffic. It cannot automatically be transferred to Spain, another period or every query.
Diagnose before blaming AI
Review impressions, clicks and position by query group. Separate branded and generic searches, countries, devices and page types. Check indexing, competition, seasonality and site changes.
| Signal | Next question |
|---|---|
| Fewer impressions | Did demand, coverage or visibility change? |
| Stable impressions, fewer clicks | What changed in results, position or presentation? |
| Stable visits, fewer enquiries | Does the onsite journey still work? |
| More irrelevant queries | Does the content reach prospective customers? |
These questions distinguish problems that need different interventions.
Google's guidance on AI search features
Google applies established SEO fundamentals to its AI features: useful content, crawlability and technical eligibility. Its guidance does not offer a special file or markup that guarantees inclusion.
Be cautious of proposals selling a tag as assured access to AI summaries. Neither indexing nor structured data guarantees appearance in a particular answer.
Improve what the reader can use
Answer the main question early. Add examples, limitations, comparison criteria and relevant sources. Explain the method behind original data; do not invent first-hand experience where none exists.
Informational pages can remain useful. When the purpose warrants it, add a demonstration, tool or clear next step. A 3D configurator should resolve a product question, not exist solely as a reaction to traffic statistics.
Measure meaningful outcomes
Track qualified enquiries and completed tasks alongside visits. Define what each page should help someone do, then assess whether its content supports that purpose.
To investigate a decline, tell us which pages changed and when.
