Astra in Blender and Unreal: what the 3D workflow demonstrates

Turning a brief into an editable scene is useful. Production also requires knowing how that scene is built, transferred and checked.

OpenAI's architectural visualisation example supports a more concrete discussion than whether AI can “do 3D”: which work can be expressed as code, and which results still need inspection.

That distinction helps a studio choose a test it can meaningfully review.

What the published example describes

OpenAI explains that Astra built the scene through Blender's Python API, running scripts in background mode. The Unreal transfer used FBX geometry and a JSON scene description, with unit and material conversion.

The author notes approximated shader behaviour and visual inspection. This is a provider-described case, not an independent productivity comparison.

What to test in your own pipeline

Choose a bounded task such as organising a scene, checking names, preparing exports or reproducing cameras. Define the input file and an acceptable output.

A script can be inspected, versioned and repeated. Those properties do not automatically make it correct; test scenes must contain the actual difficulties of your assignment.

TestWhat to inspect
StructureNames, hierarchies and instances
TransformsScale, axes, pivots and placement
MaterialsTextures, colour spaces and equivalence
ExportWhat survives and what changes
Repeat executionUnwanted duplication or destructive changes

What a final image cannot establish

A render shows composition and appearance from one camera. It does not certify animation topology, exact dimensions, editability or performance on another device.

Request the files and make a representative change. If a client needs material or layout revisions, include that task in acceptance.

Our guide to AI-generated meshes in production develops these checks.

Plan a controlled pilot

Use copies and authorised material. Restrict accessible files and services, and review scripts before applying them to important scenes. Check the connector's permissions too: connecting tools does not isolate execution.

Measure preparation, execution, corrections and review. Compare with the current procedure and record the human intervention required.

The final question is practical: does this workflow repeatedly produce the required file with manageable review? To define the test, tell us which Blender or Unreal step you want to automate.
